(915) 345-3774Why Dekton Outperforms Other Surfaces in Desert Climates
El Paso sees more than 300 days of sunshine per year, which isn't great for most countertops. The UV rays can fade color, dry out sealants, and break down resin-based materials more quickly than most homeowners realize. I've removed countertops near Kern Place that looked ten years older than they actually were, all caused by the relentless Borderland sun flooding into a kitchen window each afternoon.
Dekton countertops aren't like that.
Dekton undergoes a process called particle sintering, which compresses raw minerals in high heat and pressure. The Tile Council of North America reports that the sintered surface is one of the highest rated surfaces for UV stability and thermal shock, which is for this area. Your counters near a west-facing window won't yellow, warp, or fade. The color you select is the color that will remain 5, 10, 15 years down the road.
But the sun isn't the only factor at play here. Consider the effects of desert living on a kitchen:
- Dry air saps moisture from porous surfaces, eventually causing microscopic cracks
- Temperature fluctuations between summer and winter extremes will stress and stress weaker materials
- Hard water leaves mineral stains that will stain unprotected surfaces over time
- Dust and sand from everyday cleaning are abrasive to soft surfaces
Dekton countertops resist all of these factors. With zero porosity, there's nothing that will be absorbed into the surface, be it water, grease, or the red chile sauce from last night's enchiladas. There's also no need for sealing. Having been family owned and operated in El Paso since 1985, we have seen many material fads come and go in our area, and what lasts in this area.
When most people swap out their natural stone surfaces for Dekton countertops, they say roughly the same thing: they can't believe how low maintenance it is. No resealing, no special cleaners, no anxiety about putting a hot pan on the counter. That is a daily improvement that most customers enjoy while cooking in their kitchens.
Choosing the Right Dekton Thickness and Finish for Your Project
This is where most people get lost. We show customers 12 amazing looking slabs, and then ask them which thickness and finish is right for their project. At this point, your eyes start to look through me. Totally understandable.
Here's the short version of that. We carry three standard Dekton countertop thicknesses and each is for a different type of application.
- 8mm (ultra-thin): We use 8mm for wall panels, back splashes, and shower walls. It's light enough for easy wall installation, cuts cleanly on vertical surfaces, and looks virtually invisible on wall surfaces. A lot of customers near us put thin Dekton behind their fireplace, giving them a modern look.
- 12mm: A great choice for kitchen countertops if you'd like a thinner look (provided it's adequately supported underneath). We see 12mm in many modern kitchens in the Kern Place area.
- 20mm (standard): This is what we recommend for most kitchen countertops and bathroom vanity tops. It handles daily use without fuss, gives you a solid edge profile, and doesn't need extra reinforcement.
We suggest using 20mm countertops in most kitchen applications because that is how people live and cook.
Next come the finishes. Dekton provides a finish range from matte to polished. We also stock a textured option that has a grip to the touch that mimics the natural feel of stone. Samples of all finishes in our Gateway Blvd E showroom to allow you to touch all surfaces side-by-side (photos can only show so much). We also point you to the Cosentino website page on Dekton kitchen countertop styles and specs if you want to check out the full range of Dekton kitchen countertop possibilities before arriving at our location.
Faced with difficulty deciding which finish to go for? We encounter that question frequently. Matte finishes offer more fingerprint and spotting resistance than polished options. Polished countertops have that shiny, reflective surface that looks great when your kitchen is well lit. Textured finishes have an application for outdoor kitchens in the Borderland where the dust and dirt is hard to keep off your surfaces.
Since 1985, our family business has been helping El Paso customers navigate these decisions. Our family-owned business isn't about pushing the most expensive countertop options on customers. Rather, we ask about your lifestyle, your habits for how you cook and clean, and what you have to worry about (such as backpacks landing on your countertop after school). Then we select the right thickness and finish options for your actual lifestyle, not a magazine or a TV commercial.
The Dekton Countertop Installation Process in El Paso Step by Step
We've installed many Dekton countertops in kitchens across El Paso from the Westside of town through the neighborhoods in Cielo Vista. Each project follows a carefully crafted process. There are no shortcuts.
Once you've chosen your countertop slab, here is what to expect:
- Template your kitchen. A countertop fabricator will come to your home with laser-measuring technology to create a detailed template for your new countertops, including measurements for sink and cooktop cutouts, as well as any edge details. This step can take an hour or less, depending on the scope of the kitchen or bathroom.
- Have the fabricator cut your Dekton countertops in the workshop. At our fabrication facility, we precisely cut your Dekton countertops using CNC machines with diamond-tipped blade tooling designed specifically for manufacturing ultra-compact surfaces. This kind of material is harder than granite or quartz. As stone fabricators since 1985, we've learned how to cut stone with precision to avoid chipping or cracking.
- Dry fit and inspect the pieces. No countertop pieces will be left our shop without a thorough check for fit and quality. Seams are checked. Edges are polished. If any part doesn't fit to spec (even fractionally) at this stage, we make the necessary corrections on the spot.
- Installation day. Our team arrives at your home with your finished countertops, then places them over your new kitchen cabinets and fastens everything down securely.
- Seamless sealing. We seal your cutouts around the sink and cooktop, ensuring seams are color-matched with exceptional precision to make them virtually invisible.
- Final walkthrough. After we've tidied up, we take you on a tour of the completed countertops. You examine every single area, every corner, and every seam. We won't depart the site until you're completely satisfied.
Typically, the entire journey from templating to installation spans five to seven business days, with the installation itself usually concluding within the morning on most occasions.
We always advise homeowners in the Borderland area to make sure that your cabinets are properly leveled and anchored prior to us taking measurements. As Dekton is a substantial material with considerable weight, unstable cabinetry can present issues. Should we identify any problems during the templating visit, we're happy to alert you at that moment, allowing you to resolve the issue before the production phase begins.
We also have full control over quality from slab selection to the final installation since we procure stone directly from Brazil and partner with a reputable Dekton vendor.

(915) 345-3774Why Dekton is Ideal for El Paso Outdoor Kitchens and Covered Patios
We encounter this every week. Clients in the Borderland region seek kitchens and social areas that can withstand the harsh realities of the desert climate. Dekton excels in this regard, outperforming most materials we use.
In El Paso, outdoor surfaces face extreme conditions: continuous sun exposure, thermal shifts from below-freezing mornings to sweltering 100°F+ afternoon, duststorms throughout the Upper Valley region, and sudden summer monsoon downpours. Many materials succumb to cracking, discoloration, or staining under these elements. Dekton does not.
This durability stems from Dekton's particle sintering process, where raw minerals are fused at incredibly high temperatures and pressure, resulting in a virtually non-porous surface. Whether it's grill grease or a margarita spill, the liquid will not penetrate the slab. It wipes away effortlessly.
This is why we highly recommend it for outdoor applications:
- UV-stable and will not fade despite prolonged exposure to El Paso sunlight
- Resilient to freeze-thaw cycles, preventing cracks during winter lows
- Thermally resistant to high temperatures near outdoor pizza ovens and grills
- Scratch and stain resistant, with no need for any sealing
We've placed Dekton countertops in the covered patios of Coronado Hills as well as full outdoor kitchens in East El Paso, and after two years, they still exhibit no fading or surface deterioration.
Unsure whether the current structure of your outdoor space is ready for the weight of a stone countertop? This is a concern we often address. We assess the stability and configuration of your outdoor area before we commence fabrication. Come see us at our showroom on Gateway Blvd E where we can review your photos or blueprints. COMAF has been helping El Paso since 1985 and we've experienced every kind of outdoor job this town can throw at us. We'll give it to you straight on if Dekton is right for you or if a different material would serve you better.
Maintenance for Dekton and What To Do When An Edge Chipping
Dekton countertops are among the least maintenance-intensive stone alternatives on the market, and we hear this same advice from customers weekly: use a cloth with some warm water to clean it and that's about it.
Because Dekton is so close to being completely non-porous you will never need to seal the surface. Ever. Unlike granite and marble which require annual or biannual sealing. For more sticky or sticky messes like baked-on salsa or set coffee, you can use a mild detergent or dish soap. Don't worry, abrasive cleaning pads won't harm the surface much (and we have seen some with little effect) but if they do dull the surface eventually you wouldn't want to.
Normal Cleaning Advice
- Use a moistened cloth to clean up any spilled liquids immediately, not because Dekton is stain resistant, but because it's best to keep things neat.
- Avoid scraping food off the surface, or other debris with a metal tool.
- Never use chlorine bleach on matte finished surfaces, as it has a potential to cause a cloudy film.
- If you cook on a slow cooker or stovetop griddle, put a trivet under it before using.
The following is the honest answer, and I don't mean to say that Dekton is indestructible because it isn't: its very dense structure makes it very strong, but the edges can chip under some rare and very specific circumstances. We see this maybe a handful of times a year across all our El Paso installs. Someone drops a cast iron skillet and it catches an edge; someone accidentally drops a big heavy plant pot near the edge. And that's it. If it happens to you, it happens, and don't freak out.
Dekton edges can be repaired with small chips. Our shop makes a custom repair with color matching resins followed by polishing. The time is typically less than one hour and in most cases you will be unable to locate the area afterwards. We repair these types of problems for our friends in Cielo Vista and other locations throughout the Borderland every week, and the color-matched resins bond to the Dekton surface to create a very strong durable repair.
In addition, because we've been a family business in El Paso since 1985, we can provide service to you directly. We won't have to direct you to a contractor or put you on a long wait list. You just call us at (915) 345-3774, make an appointment, and we will make it happen. That's the simple of it.
Just let us know if you find any small chips in the first few weeks after the installation because that could be an installation problem we have to fix, or it could be a problem caused from damage, either way we want to see it and correct it.
